Once again, the elegant Honourable Miss Phryne Fisher finds herself deeply involved in a mysterious situation! Waking unusually early one morning, Phryne is gifted with some rare free time to enjoy. After dropping off her daughters for charity work at the Blind Institute, she pays a visit to a university professor whom she had previously met and respected during a past case. Over lunch, the professor, clearly taken with Phryne, extends an invitation for her to dine at his home in Williamstown later in the week. Bookending her lovely dinner with her new acquaintance Jeoffrey, Phryne stumbles upon two troubling discoveries: first, an abandoned opium pipe in the park, and later the body of a Chinese man washed up on the beach--his cause of death unclear, but ultimately deemed a homicide.
Not long after, the teenage sister-in-law of Phryne's longtime love interest Lin Chung goes missing from her home. However, things take a darker turn when one of Jeoffrey's colleagues is murdered during a Chinese-themed party he is hosting, leaving Phryne to question if all these incidents are somehow connected. To add to the mystery, cryptic notes begin appearing in Phryne's letterbox, warning her to "REPENT" because "THE WAGES OF SIN IS DEATH".
Alongside the formidable and stylish Phryne, this intriguing mystery also delves into the investigations of Phryne's three wards, each working on their own cases: Ruth and Jane tracking down an embezzler at the Institute, and Tinker assisting Phryne in identifying the author of the ominous notes.
